Ghana's victory and the Israeli flag?

What is up with Ghana player "John Benestil"? This player, and as Ghana scored the second goal to stun the Czech Republic waived the Israeli flag. Nobody knows where did he get the flag from and why did he carry an Israeli flag instead of a Ghanaian one? I am not sure, may be he has a different agenda, just as the IAF! Just kidding.

I considered boycotting the whole cup because of this idiot.
He does play for Hapoel Tel Aviv, and he pulled the rag out of his socks after both goals and at then end of the game. The stupid idiot did not even score.

He must be one of the many Africans who immigrated to historical Palestine on the claims that they are Jewish

It's called the right of Birth, I've talked about this in my blog!

Like this guy most probably have served in the IDF or something!

Well, whatever his reasons are: it is just akward to play for a national team while your heart really belong to another nation. I wonder how do Ghanians react to that?

Hamzeh N. said...

If he plays for an Israeli team, maybe he has dual citizenship as both a Ghanian and Israeli, and since Israel didn't qualify he thought this was the way to represent his other country as well.

This is not the first time I see the Israeli flag in the world cup, I was actually waiting to see where it will show up. In 2002, I saw the Israeli flag in more than one game dangling from the side by some fans.

I did apply for tickets for this World Cup and I was planning on buying both a Jordanian and a Palestinian flag to try to show with my friends. But I never got tickets :(

Sorry to hear about your bad luck. however there is a big different between being a fan or a player a national team. If you are a player then you are representing that country.
Even if he has a dual citizenship, since he decided to play for the Ghanaian team and sang their national anthym at the begining of each match, he should have stayed away from waiving the other flag. Again, I wish I could hear what the Ghanian people think of that.

May be he was kissing the Israrelis butt so he can immigrate to Israel. Think if he lives as a single in Israel and wants to bring his family who still live back in Ghana. May be he thought that Ehud Olmert will be touched by him carrying the Israeli flag?! Kiss my .........

Is it possible he just likes the colors of the flag??

By the way, I think I know you issam, check my blog.

Issam, I asked myself the question of whether it would be considered inappropriate for him to do that out of respect for the country that he's playing for in the world cup and quite honestly I can't convince myself that it is.

The guy is giving to Ghana in this world cup nothing less than any other player on his team. He might have shown Israel's flag once, but he wore Ghana's flag on his shirt the entire game. He might have waved the flag to the camera, but he kicked the ball around for 90 minutes against his team's opponents for Ghana. He might have held Israel's flag, but he sang Ghana's national anthem and stood for it.

So I don't think it's that big of a deal.

I understand why people like you and me would be irritated by it. I am irritated honestly but there's nothing that we can do about it and I don't think we can say it was inappropriate for him to do. I just wish one day some player will raise the Palestinian flag instead, who knows?

Doesn't sound too ethical to be praising another nation when playing for your own national team, shouldn't there be a punishment for such behavior? He really messed up everyone's cheering for Ghana.

If an American player raised the MExican flag they'll definitely criticize him heavily. IF Zidane for example raised the Algerian flag very few will keep supporting him. That player for Ghana only plays for the ISraelis and he remembered to keep their flag in his shoes but forgot to keep his flag.

It is not about the Israeli flag, Hamzeh. If he raised the American flag for example, probably I will have the same feelings. I think it is just tacky thing to do. But that is me.

Hareega, if Zidan raised the Algerian flag, probably the Frensh will strip him off his French Nationality :-) Salam, I am not sure if there is any regulations in FIFA about that. This guy's behavior is so bizzare that no one could anticipate such a thing to happen:-)
Dude, I tried to check your blog several times today but I could not get through. The server was down.

Reading a little more about this on the internet, I learn two facts:

1- In his matches in Israel, he often waves the Ghana flag after the match.

2- In an interview in Israel before the world cup, he promised the reporter to wave Israel's flag if the Ghana team wins.

I KNEW that somebody on Jordan Planet would comment on this. Let him wave whatever he wants, he works hard for his team. If his country has a problem with it, it's their business. Not ours.

issam said...

Hamzeh, thanks for your explanation. Natalia, I have a problem with his bizzare behavior, if he was trying to make a political statment. This is a sport event and nobody should exploit it. Good thing that he was not.

The Israeli flag represents humanity, tolerance, freedom and democracy. What does the Jordanian, Palestinian, Iranian, Iraqi or most other muslim countries have to be proud of? Dictatorship? Mass murders? Poverty to the people - wealth to the rulers? Ignorance of the common person? Brainwash of the media? Hatred to people based on religion only?

And no, I am not Israeli, or even Jewish. Believe it or not, I am a faithful Muslim, wishing we would have been so much better than we are now.

issam said...

Yes, the Israeli flag rememebe all these meanings that you talked about to the Israelis. But surely it resembles other meanings to the Palestinians. Occupation... the longest occupation in the modern history.

I was deeply moved by IMAD's words.
As a former Israeli who served in the IDF I am not aware of any personal wrongdoing in my service but I regret and ask forgiveness for any transgressions of others. The Arabs in general and the Palestinians in particular are our brothers and sisters. The Israelis crave for peace. If we all want, the walls will come down. We could be like the European Union. Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, Israel one day maybe a confederation where people are respected and live in prosperity and harmony. Because of IMAD and other enlightened people the realization of such vision is possible.

hi all. i'm from ghana. i just wanted people to know that many people are upset by what painstil did. as you know, ghana is neutral about israel and he doesn't in any way represent what we stand for. ghana also has a large muslim population and hardly any jews. something to think about.

Natalia said...

The people in the stands were his Israeli fans. He plays in Israel during the regular season. So there's no politics in what he did, at least none that I can see. Mordecai, that was beautiful.

GOD BLESS ISRAEL

Yes there are more muslims in Ghana than jews....but it wont have been a problem if he waved another countries flag....people just hate Israel for whatever reasons and hate those who love her...and that thats all Leave the guy alone...and fight Israel if you can they will bomb your ass back to the stone age....GO ISRAEL!

Clearly many of the posters here know little about football, less about Ghana, and even less Paintsil (yes the blogger mispelled his name horribly). Paintsil is nor Israeli. At the time of the world cup he did live there. He is not jewish. At the time he played his proffesional soccer for Tel Aviv, and a section of his fans travelled to Germany to support him. He pulled out the flag as a way of thanking them for their support. He doesn't care about Palestine or middle eastern politics, I'm from Ghana, and I'm not offended by what he did, I don't see why anyone else should be.
